Being a service-oriented museum, the Yemisi Shyllon Museum of Art (YSMA) focuses on advancing culture and knowledge by engaging diverse publics and helping them learn through and about art. To achieve this mission, the YSMA has identified the need for professional development in the arts, specifically, in the museum sector.
The International Council of Museums (ICOM) organises annual Regional Training in different parts of the world. These workshops are an opportunity for museum professionals to gain insights, strategies, tools and a holistic understanding of museum functions, in a bid to promote their country’s heritage through participatory projects.
This year, the YSMA is partnering with ICOM to host one such event in Nigeria. “This affords the YSMA a chance to contribute to museology and cultural development in Nigeria, particularly with regards to improving the standard of museum services in Nigeria”, said Madonna Iloba, the YSMA’s Communications and Advancement Officer. This event is supported by the National Museum of African American History & Culture, Smithsonian Institution.
In this light, the YSMA is calling for applications for the ICOM Regional Training, which will be held in November 2022 on the museum’s premises. All applications are to be submitted through the online form before midnight (CET+1), on September 16, 2022.
